The reunited pre-1993 lineup of ANTHRAX — Joey Belladonna (vocals), Frank Bello (bass), Scott Ian (guitar), Dan Spitz (guitar) and Charlie Benante (drums) — were the special guests on on the "Friday Night Rocks" show on New York's Q104.3 FM this past Friday (April 1). The reformed group discussed their upcoming tour, new DVD plans and the possibility of a new studio album, among other topics. Several excerpts from the interview follow:
On how the "reunion" came about:
Charlie Benante: "Last summer we were in Europe doing a bunch of shows, whatever… We just got to the end of it, and I had this idea. 'Wow, it would be great to do something really special for our 20th anniversary,' which was last year. It would be great to do a reunion tour — put everybody back together and get that thing going. And I think I put the spark in Scott's head, and then we waited a few months, we got new management, and they put it into place, actually — they got it going. And that was it. It came together. It was the right time to do it."
Scott Ian: "And actually it came together really easily, and that was the key, because if it was a case where it was gonna have to be like, 'Well, so-and-so is not into it and there's arm-twisting or whatever…' I mean, if it came down to that, then there would be no reason to do it. Because why would we do this unless we were gonna have fun doing it? None of us are gonna end up on [MTV's] 'Cribs' because of this reunion tour. So the idea was, 'Let's go have fun.' Let's commemorate our career by doing this."
On why a previous attempt (in 2000) to have Belladonna touring with the band alongside then-singer John Bush fell through and why a reunion with Belladonna is happening now:
Joey Belladonna: "At this time, we feel that this is right, so… That just didn't pan out. I think it was kind of a tight squeeze to get it together and it just didn't work. I don't know if anybody really said that they didn't wanna do it. I've always been into it, from the beginning."
On how the bandmembers seem to be interacting each other like no time has passed since the Belladonna/Spitz lineup dissolved:
Scott Ian: "That's how it was Wednesday night [March 30] when we had the big set-up and everybody showed up at this loft where all the cameras were waiting to see everyone's reactions when we all walked into the room. I'm not sure if they expected it to be bigger or tense or more emotional, but it was kind of like, 'What's up?' It was exactly that. Joey walked in and it didn't feel like 13 years had passed at all. It's like, 'It's Joey Belladonna, it's Dan Spitz, we're ANTHRAX.' It was very comfortable and very easy."
On Frank's current status with HELMET (the band he joined after leaving ANTHRAX):
Frank Bello: "The story is, I did the tour, and it was great. I knew I had to do this. I talked to Page [Hamilton, HELMET leader] and Johnny [Tempesta, HELMET drummer] and Chris [Traynor], and they were great about it. They just told me, 'You have to do this,' and it was just decided. In fact, later on tonight, Johnny's in town, I hope to be drunk with him later. It's all good, it's all positive, and Page asked me to play on the next record, so it's all good."
On how previous ANTHRAX singer John Bush and guitarist Rob Caggiano are dealing with the news of the reunion:
Frank Bello: "We just left Rob. He's in a bar. He's getting loaded in another bar right now, so he's fine with everything."
Charlie Benante: 'That's how he's dealing with it." (laughs)
Scott Ian: "You know, John and Rob are part of this ANTHRAX family. Nobody's been fired from the band. That's the one thing that… There's so many rumors on the Internet. I don't think anything we ever say will dispel any of the rumors of the speculation. I mean, according to the Internet, we're still doing Ozzfest."
Frank Bello: "We're still doing Ozzfest. It's booked."
Scott Ian: "They're still saying it. It was still on there today saying that we're doing it. . . But everyone's cool. John Bush is part of the ANTHRAX family, Rob Caggiano is part of the ANTHRAX family, and everything is good."
On the possibility of a new studio album with this lineup:
Frank Bello: "We're all taking this day to day. Who knows about tomorrow? Nobody knows anything. So it's day to day, let's play the shows, let's see where it goes from there."
Scott Ian: "We understand why people [are constantly asking], 'Are you gonna make a record?' But we have no idea. Let us just have fun doing this. We haven't even played yet in a room together. That doesn't even happen until the end of this month. All we've been doing is blabbing our mouths quite a bit for the last three days and hanging out with each other, which has been great, and the vibe is really cool, so we're just gonna take it as it comes."
On the possibility of touring with MEGADETH this summer:
Frank Bello: "No, we'll be in Europe. I think it's great that people wanna see us on tours like that, but when it's right, it'll be right.
Scott Ian: "We are playing shows with MEGADETH in Europe. Not that it does anyone good over here."
On why they're not doing Ozzfest this year:
Frank Bello: "Sharon [Osbourne] never asked! . . If people are pissed about that, go to Ozzfest.com, say you're pissed about us not being on it, 'cause we were supposed to be on it, whatever. It's not happening. We were never approached about it, it was a serious rumor, and fine. We belong on it, [but] we're not there."
Scott Ian: "The plan is, we're basically out of the country until the end of August, and the plans is September/October, sometime in that time frame is when we'll be touring the United States. . . We don't know who we're gona have out. The plan is to go out and do a headlining run. I'm sure we'll have some bands opening for us — we don't know who yet, it's still way too early, we don't know who's even gonna be available at that time. And I would assume, venue-wise, that we would be playing places like Roseland [in New York City], like that size, I would assume. That would be the goal."
On the possibility of releasing a new DVD:
Scott Ian: "Actually, we plan on doing a DVD. It's not just gonna be a straight-up concert DVD. Of course, there will be that, but we plan to make it more of a documentary."

ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian recently spoke to 411Mania.com about the reunion of the band's classic pre-1993 lineup and the group's plans for the future. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow:
411Mania.com: Tell us how the reunion of the classic lineup came about. Was this something that the band was working on for a while or did it just suddenly happen?
Scott Ian: "It actually came from an idea that Charlie [Benante, drums] had last year. We wanted to do something to celebrate the band's 20th anniversary and he thought of this. So we got a hold of Joey [Belladonna, vocals] and Danny [Spitz, guitar] and they were all for it. We all met up again and the sparks ignited and it was a done deal. Everybody was agreeable to it; if we had to twist someone's arm for this to happen, then it wouldn't have. There'd have been no point in doing it."
411Mania.com: How does it feel having the "old gang" back together? Was this something you'd envisioned for a long time?
Scott Ian: "Not really. Not until Charlie came up with it last year. And as it works out, with everyone's schedule and the way it came together, this is the only way it could have happened. The timing was just perfect with the way it came together and worked out. We never thought about any of the logistics, we just went and got it done. Since we did, it's been really fun seeing everyone again."
411Mania.com: Tell us a bit about the DVD stemming from this. I understand it's a documentary of the lineup reforming?
Scott Ian: "We are putting together a DVD for the reunion. We're still shooting for it now, as a matter of fact. I'm not sure at what point we'll turn the cameras off and start editing, but I know we will soon. Otherwise, we'd be filming this thing forever! [Laughs] But probably within the next 1 1/2-2 months, we'll stop the cameras and get it edited together."
411Mania.com: What would you like to see happen, ideally, with the classic lineup being back together?
Scott Ian: "Well, we've always been a band that just did out own thing. We've never really set any goals, we just did what we wanted and set out to do. Right now I'm just looking forward to jamming with these guys and playing in the same room which we haven't even done yet! [Laughs] Other than that, we just want to go out and have fun with it. If a new album comes of it, great. Then it happened for a reason because we were able to write music together again. Right now, though, we're just looking at the tour and seeing what comes of it and taking it day by day. We're doing this just to have a little fun."

ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante spoke to Jonathon Moran of Australia's The Daily Telegraph this week about the group's upcoming "reunion" tour, which is scheduled to hit Australia in May.
After a 13-year break, ANTHRAX's "classic" lineup of Benante, Joey Belladonna (vocals), Frankie Bello (bass), Scott Ian (guitar) and Danny Spitz (guitar) will tour together, beginning with three warm-up shows in the U.S.
"Back when we started, there was just heavy metal," Benante said from Chicago.
"And then it got branched off to like speed metal and thrash metal.
"We definitely took something and made it what it is today."
The heavy metal outfit will perform dates in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Scarborough on their Australian tour.
"I'm anxious and nervous," Benante said of the reunion tour.
"Until we get a few shows under our belt I probably won't even look up."
The band's most recent vocalist, John Bush (ARMORED SAINT) gave his blessing for the "classic" ANTHRAX lineup to reform for the reunion tour.
"We are just doing this reunion tour and then we'll take baby steps," Benante said.
That said, the group has no plans on releasing a new album together but will record a documentary DVD of the reunion.
"Most of us now are much more mature," he said.
"We are better players now so I just feel the shows are going to be very, very, very exciting."

ANTHRAX bassist Frank Bello spoke to Australia's Pyromusic.net about the group's upcoming "reunion" tour, which is scheduled to hit Australia in May.
Pyromusic.net: What kind of a set-list can we expect for these shows? All pre-'93?
Frank Bello: "Oh, man, we have so many. It goes from 'Deathrider', to 'Got the Time', to 'Medusa', there's so many different songs in there from that era — we're gonna mix 'em up. There are so many songs we haven't played in years, I mean, literally years, and we want to make it special. We're actually going back and re-learning these songs because I think we've only played some of these songs a couple of times in our lives. So it should be great! It should be fun!"
Pyromusic.net: Rumours of a new reunion album abound, is there any weight to these rumors?
Frank Bello: "Right now, to tell you the truth, what I'm concentrating on is doing this reunion tour. And to be honest with you, all I can do is concentrate on day-to-day things. I can't really think about later on because I don't know if that's gonna happen. If it happens, great, but right now I just want to enjoy the time with these guys and playing with them because there's a genuine great vibe we have going on together."
Pyromusic.net: That sounds great because there wasn't always a positive vibe regarding Joey or Danny as performers after they left the band. How has that changed?
Frank Bello: "Well, Danny just really lost his passion there for a while and needed a change in his life and that's why he went off to Switzerland and started getting involved in watchmaking. He just left the music business for a while, which was probably good for his life. Joey did his own thing with his own band, which was smart — he jammed with a lot of people. And I think, it all needed to be like that for a while, 'coz everyone gets their space and everybody comes together later on and you've got that genuine striving hunger that we all have right now. That's why it's funny when you see the five of us in a room now, it's like, 'We're ready to go!'"
Pyromusic.net: That leads into my next question nicely: Do you have anything you'd like to say to the people who have cynically labelled this reunion as a capitalist venture only?
Frank Bello: "Well, all I can say, and I'm being completely honest here — I grew up in the Bronx with humble beginnings and nobody is building houses on the back of this tour, that's as honest as I can be. There's no Ferraris or mansions that are gonna be bought from doing this tour. This is more just a feeling that this is the right thing to be doing right now, it comes from within, and the timing is right for it."
Pyromusic.net: What keeps the ANTHRAX machine pumping after 20 years then?
Frank Bello: "It's just the great music … it's the songs, it's the show and the energy and there's a chemistry here that when the five of us get on stage it's just amazing. I look forward to feeling that again. Next Monday is our first rehearsal with the reunion line-up and I'm really pumped for that and next Friday is our first show, a warm-up show in Detroit, and I'm really looking forward to it! It's right in your face, it's right here you know, and I love the whole 'living on the edge' vibe, it's great!"

ANTHRAX have set a September 27 release date for their brand-new live CD/DVD. The package is expected to include recordings made at the band's June 3 performance at The Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, New Jersey along with documentary and behind-the-scenes-style footage covering the reunion of the band's classic lineup of Joey Belladonna (vocals), Dan Spitz (guitar), Frank Bello (bass), Scott Ian (guitar) and Charlie Benante (drums).
ANTHRAX will spend the next couple of months on the Euroepan festival circuit before taking a break and embarking on a U.S. headlining tour beginning in late October. The North American trek is expected to last well into December. Exact cities and dates will be announced soon.
