Ancient Warrior Citation: After the departure of BLACK SABBATH's third vocalist Ian Gillan following the "Born Again" album (released in 1983) the band effectively split up and the remaining members embarked upon their own solo ventures. However, pressure from record companies and management would dictate the name BLACK SABBATH should forge-ahead and even though guitarist Tony Iommi would by now be the sole remaining original member, his unmistakable musicality and signature guitar sound would prove more than sufficient to keep the heart of BLACK SABBATH alive and beating deep into the 1980s and beyond. "Seventh Star" (originally released in 1986) saw Iommi recruiting the skills of Dave "The Beast" Spitz and drummer Eric Singer (later of KISS) and for the first time the position of a keyboardist became a visible credit and long-serving back-room operator Geoff Nicholls was finally brought to the foreground as an official member. However, it would be the position of lead vocalist that would have the greatest impact upon the new SABBATH sound and the appointment of ex-TRAPEZE and DEEP PURPLE bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes set interest and expectations high. "Seventh Star" would be somewhat of a departure from what was expected from the BLACK SABBATH name, and the songs on "Seventh Star" are more blues inclined and in the case of the single release, "No Stranger To Love", an altogether more AOR- and radio-friendly breeze is adopted. This remastered deluxe expanded edition of the album adds the U.S. remix of the "No Stranger To Love" single and also for the very first time on CD, a live performance from London's Hammersmith Odeon in June '86 which features then-unknown American singer Ray Gillen who was brought-in to complete the tour following the departure of Glenn Hughes due to illness. "The Eternal Idol" (BLACK SABBATH's thirteenth studio album released in 1987) was an altogether harder-sounding record and brought back an "edge" that had been missing from "Seventh Star". Although the album was originally recorded with unknown American singer Ray Gillen, by the time it came to the album release Tony Martin had joined the band and subsequently replaced all the vocal work for the final album. "The Eternal Idol" remastered deluxe expanded edition adds two single B-sides from "The Shining" — "Black Moon" and "Some Kind Of Woman" — while the second disc brings to CD for the very first time the complete album session originally recorded by the late Ray Gillen. _________________ It's the nexus of the crisis and the origin of storms

En tout cas, les disques bonus ne sont pas du foutage de gueule, et je ne suis pas sur qu'il y ait un matériel bonus semblable pour les albums 70's, d'où peut-être l'absence de réeditions "deluxe" pour ces albums. Cela dit, The eternal Idol n'est vraiment pas un album terrible... Une réedition de Born Again avec un disc live ne plus, ça ça aurait de la gueule, les lives avec Gillan valent leur pesant de cacahuètes.

Pour les versions deluxe, je suis sûr que les deux moustachus ont de quoi remplir des CDs bonus ras la tronche pour tous les albums du groupe entre les lives, les versions alternatives, etc ... sinon, oui, The eternal Idol est effectivement bien daubique ... sorti de l'enormissime "The Shining" et du titre de clôture, le reste est bien pauvre ... Mais à ce que je sais, les archives audio live 70's de Sabbath sont rare, à moins de chercher dans les boot au son tout pourri. Et je crois pas qu'ils aient produit grand chose en face b de single, outakes etc contrairement à un Deep Purple durant cette décennie. Ceux qui en savent plus confiremeront/infirmeront.

He writes, "It's been heavily rumored for some time now that 'Born Again' was getting a little extra treatment. In the Universal Deluxe Edition series, they went from 'Heaven And Hell' / 'Mob Rules' / 'Live Evil' to the release batch that had 'Seventh Star' and 'Eternal Idol' (November 2010). Then in February 2011, they did 'Dehumanizer'. 'Born Again' got skipped over. I was told earlier in 2010 that 'Born Again' was going to be skipped (even before its turn in the original release order came up), because they were doing some extra work on it, hence the extra time, or 'delay.' I later came to believe from a couple of sources that it was because it was finally getting the legendary 'proper mix.' "You've all heard the stories about Ian Gillan's hearing the final mix and throwing up. Well, the rumors go that the 2011 release of the album would do away with Mr. Gillan's propensity for vomiting in regards to the final mix. "When the news broke of what is going to be on the 'Born Again' two-CD Deluxe Edition a couple of days ago, I decided to look into the status of the original album's representation in the package. Much to the disappointment of several people, I was told that the album was not remixed — it was just remastered. When I inquired why, I was told that they couldn't find the original multi-track master tapes that would be needed to do a remix. This was the primary reason for the delay, that they kept trying to track down the multi-tracks to do a remix, but could not. They couldn't delay the release indefinitely, so instead, they opted for a completely new remaster. The only other time the album was remastered was in 1996 for the Castle remaster series. "It's disappointing yes, but all is not lost. "[BLACK SABBATH guitarist] Tony Iommi's manager did go on to say this: 'The tapes have been held by a number of labels — Vertigo, Castle, Sanctuary, Universal, and moved around, which is why we still have hopes that they have simply been separated.' Si je comprends biens, ils n'ont pas retrouvé les enregistrements d'origine pour faire un remix mais ont encore espoir de mettre la main dessus...mouais. C'est vrai que le son de Born again est assez particulier et bien inférieur à Mob rules et HnH, mais faut voire ce que donne ce remaster. J'aime bien cet album en fait. Pour la production rudimentaire, elle ne me dérange absolument pas, au contraire elle contribue à l'ambiance spéciale de l'album, je ne suis pas certains que ce soit une bonne chose de le remixer. Sinon je vois que The Eternal Idol est loin de faire l'unanimité. Pour ma part je l'apprécie beaucoup. Outre The shining et Eternal idol, des titres heavy/FM comme Ancient warrior, Glory ride ou Born to lose (et ce solo !) sont vraiment entrainants. Globalement l'album vaut pas Headless Cross, c'est sûr (et encore moins les classiques avec Ozzy et Dio ou même ce Born Again, évidemment), mais je le trouve quand même bien sympa, j'pense qu'il se tente. La réédition de Born Again a l'air cool en tout cas (pour le live quoi). J'ai deux bootlegs avec Gillan et ça rendait assez bien apparemment. _________________ Ma page Last.fm Ma page RYM
