FULLBLAST
After two extremely different Albums, No Gravity and Universo Inverso. This record is based on my rock-metal influences with a bit of Brazilian music elements, also focusing on Jazz Fusion, Latin and Rock. When it came time for preparing the third album, the question was "which direction should I take".
The music has to be a sincere "inner urge" not controllable. Flowing naturally from the heart, through the mind to the fingers. Inspiration and compositions should be conceived without a pre concept, that’s the philosophy. If not, you wouldn’t be respecting yourself as an artist.
FullBlast! was created by moving fluidly between the energy of Heavy / Progressive Rock , Brazilian, and Jazz Fusion. Representing my 17 years of working with Angra and the No Gravity Album, I wanted the Brazilian music tradition represented here by interesting harmonies, melancholic melodies, tribal and organic grooves that I’ve been listening to my entire life.
The two sides of my musical personality are exposed in extreme and pure formats, going from an acoustic guitar piece playing a real "Samba" to a fast double bass speed metal tune, and all combinations in between. Another "third" side of my dual personally is my passion for Classical music and orchestral arrangements, these are all the different kind of genres you find on FullBlast.
FullBlast searches the challenge to transcended limitations and genres while still maintaining a unique, unmistakable voice.
SONGS:
Headstrong:
Has a cheerful vibe from the beginning to the end. The intro riff reminds me of my early days trying to learn Van Halen songs. The interlude is more reflexive and brings a jazzy element contrasting with heavy riffs. This song brings Latin rhythm grooves, introducing the concept of the album.
Desperado:
The intro brings to me an image of a "Desperado" movie or pictures of the Mexicans outlaws also the Brazilians kings of "Cangaço".This song has many parts, connecting the listeners to a very percussive rock, going from minor keys atmospheres and major happier keys all through the song. An innovative way of tuning percussion instruments like the "The berimbau" (a single-string percussion instrument, a musical bow, from Brazil) to blend in the right pitch and easily create a new texture with the heavy guitar appears in this song. The research for an alternative heavy direction was one of the missions on this album.
Cutting Edge:
The challenger who lives inside me always brings songs like this one. Melodic and fast, this piece is a blast for players and listeners that love the tension, the plasticity and emotionality that speed can bring.
Excuse Me:
Contrasting fast notes and complex harmonies, ballads in major keys are something that brings me peace when I play. It has long notes, giving space for many different ways of expression. The guitar is such an incredible and expressive instrument, and that’s the key of playing from the heart. The title and the atmosphere of this song are related to the feeling of when you disappoint someone you love and respect.
Se Entrega, Corisco!:
The title in Portuguese means: Surrender, Corisco! Corisco is a famous character from a historical movie called "Black God White Devil" . It talks about the "cangaço man" the Brazilians’ Robin Hood. "Cangaço" is the name given to a form of "
A Clairvoyance:
On grey rainy afternoon I composed this piece. When using a different tuning, the music becomes more intuitive, all that matters is the sound, the combination of notes, all the skills are gone because the notes are placed in different positions. That’s the case of this song Clairvoyance," the one who sees clear". It is almost like an extra sensorial perception musical experience for me.
Corrosive Voices:
The Berimbau is such a representative instrument for Brazilian music. It opens the song introducing the main riff. Corrosive Voices also searches for a new dimensional perspective for mixing percussion, heavy guitars, alternative harmonies and rhythms for heavy rock music.
Whispering:
Is a quite old melody that I always wanted to record. I like the North American style of composing up beat ballads in major keys. The Latin tradition is more melancholic and the ballads most of the time are in minor keys. So despite being a ballad, it still brings a brighter sound and happier vibe. Nevertheless, at the end, the song turns into a really Latin wistful atmosphere.
Outrageous:
The musical dialectic, the dualism of an abstract and the of fluid melody against a furious dissertation of riffs and fast scales. The intro of this song, I created the atmosphere with three things I like the playing most acoustic guitar, percussion and creating an orchestral arrangement. This intro is world music oriented, approaching my passion for Arabian music. The song brings Angra history into my hands, not only because of the speed but also the minor classical melodies in it.
Mundo Verde:
This is a pure samba song, and despite being a rock guitar player, I always felt very proud of the music of my country and I’m not afraid to show that, this is my inverse musical universe, there is no distortion, no power chords. Mundo Verde means Green World. Not only for the ecological message on it, but also the song is in D major and I synesthetically " hear" green every time I play on this key.
Pura Vida:
Pura Vida means literally "Pure life", but the essential meaning is close to "Peace and Love" or "Life is beautiful". It is a way to send positive vibration. This song, totally based on a "maracatu" rhythm loop was the last composition of the album. During the drums recordings I felt the album needed one more song without complicated structures, shredding leads, and killer drums. It colors "the life is beautiful" painting with naïve lines but vivid tones. Much percussion blended with orchestral arrangements giving a nice layer for the guitar work.
As It Is, Infinite:
Tours, hotel rooms, tour buses, and airplanes are very solitaire environments. my best friend is always the acoustic guitar. Playing acoustic, time flies and this "atemporal" sensation always comes together with nice compositions reflecting and translating into notes and chords of the moments "I’m living".I love the sound of a minor 6 chord and this song has many of them in many different keys.
