OPETH Frontman Talks About Collaboration With MIKE PORTNOY, STEVEN WILSON - Mar. 31, 2006

OPETH frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt has confirmed reports that he is planning on collaborating with PORCUPINE TREE's Steven Wilson and DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy on an as-yet-unnamed new project. "We've been talking the three of us," Mikael said in a recent interview with Tony of KASC The Blaze 1260 AM (web site) (the campus radio station at Arizona State University). "It started with me and Steve. Once we first met, which was like six years ago or something, we've been talking about doing something, like writing together. And since he worked with [OPETH as a producer] for a couple of albums, we got that whole collaboration thing put on hold because we were already working together. With him in the studio, it was a very creative relationship that we had, but we've never really written music together, so that's still… I'm 100 percent [sure] that that's going to happen. And Portnoy... PORCUPINE TREE toured with DREAM THEATER and he wanted to be involved. I used to be a massive DREAM THEATER fan — I'm still a fan of them and he's a really nice guy, good drummer, so that's cool. And we're looking at some other people, maybe to involve some guests. I think we're gonna start slow — it's not gonna be something blown out of proportion, it's just gonna be for the sake of our love of music. I think we're gonna do a song that Steve wrote for the 'In Absentia' album that didn't make it, which is a massively fantastic song. That's what we're gonna record first, I think, unless the band comes around and they record it as a PORCUPINE TREE song, but I'd love to record that song with him and then just write some stuff. And I don't know what it's gonna be like. It's just talk right now. [But] I'm sure it's going to happen."

KASC The Blaze 1260 AM's entire interview with OPETH frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt can be downloaded in MP3 format at this location (14 MB).

In a recent interview with Drummer's Digest, Portnoy has the following to say about the above-mentioned project: "I've been a fan of [OPETH's] for years, and we've become friends the last couple of years. He and I and Steven Wilson have talked about doing something together. Hopefully some time soon we'll be able to coordinate our schedules and make it happen. I think me and Steven want to make it heavy, and I think Mikael wants to, uh, not be heavy. Because me and Steven want to do stuff that we can't do with PORCUPINE TREE and DREAM THEATER, and get to some really heavy stuff. And I think that Mikael wants to get away from the heavy stuff because he does that all the time with OPETH, so who knows. Maybe we'll meet somewhere in the middle. I think it'll be great. I mean, I've had great experiences collaborating with other people, especially people who are the kind of leaders of their bands. That was kind of what TRANSATLANTIC was about, since Neal Morse and Roine Stolt are kind of the leaders of their bands, you know. It was a great creative environment, and I think a similar chemistry would happen with Steven and Mikael."

(Thanks: Tony / KASC The Blaze 1260 AM)

Helen Barradell of Australia's X-Press Online recently conducted an interview with OPETH mainman Mikael Åkerfeldt. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

On the band's early years:

"I guess it gets more romantic in retrospect, almost like we actually had a good time. Of course we did have a good time but there's also been some very, very rough times for this band. You know, after the two first records we almost spilt up because half the band left. Nobody really cared for OPETH until we did 'Blackwater Park', which is our fifth record, and after that we weren't doing anything really. We weren't pulling people, we weren't selling records, I was the poorest man on the planet... not really, but for heavy metal, at least. But it was a rough ride and I feel like we are quite fortunate to be where we are today and I'm also quite proud of myself that we kept going, writing songs instead of working in a factory or something."

On the current status of the band's drummer Martin Lopez:

"Lopez is not on this tour, he's back home and he's not been playing with us. He's been sick for quite some time. He's had some panic attacks which have been plaguing us for a couple of tours and we've had to cancel them. I don't really know what it is. We get all these kind of things — they're saying it's a blood disorder on one hand and he's had some pains in his back and depression. It got to a point where he couldn't play anymore. He got so skinny and he couldn't play. Basically we just agreed that it wasn't working out. He had to get home and get well you know? And he's been away ever since, almost nine months."

On whether the fame game might be something Lopez finds a little to heavy to handle:

"Well, I don't know... it might be. He is a very social guy but he's not one of those guys who goes out looking for the fans and trying to...you know? He doesn't like that whole thing around him, he basically stays on the bus. It's got to a point now that he's been away for such a long time that we don't know what is going to happen. We don't know if he's ever coming back. "

According to a posting on OPETH's official web site, the band's Music For Nations catalog is being re-released by Sony/BMG on July 3. The titles that are being reissued are as follows:

"Blackwater Park" (2001)
"Deliverance" (2002)
"Damnation" (2003)
"Lamentations" DVD (2004)

It is not believed that the re-releases will contain any bonus tracks that were not included on the albums' original versions.

OPETH are continuing to tour in support of their latest opus, "Ghost Reveries", which came out last August via Roadrunner Records

After several months away from his drumming duties in OPETH, Martin Lopez has permanently decided to leave the group. After being plagued by illness and anxiety attacks Lopez decided he wanted to concentrate fully on his own project, currently unnamed. His replacement will be Martin "Axe" Axenrot, who's been filling in for the last five tours and who also recorded with the band during the recent BBC sessions.

Commented OPETH frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt: "However sad I and the rest of the band feel in light of Lopez's departure, I want to thank him for his incredible work with OPETH and immense dedication to the band. We recorded some classic stuff together and he obviously had an enormous impact on our sound. I now feel very excited to hear the material of his own band. In the meantime, OPETH fans can rest assured that we'll continue jamming it out with Axe and we all have high expectations about our coming musical ventures."

In other news, Roadrunner Records will issue a special-edition deluxe version of OPETH's latest album, "Ghost Reveries", on July 25. More details will be made available soon.

Putain ouai ...

More information has been released about the upcoming special-edition deluxe version of OPETH's latest album, "Ghost Reveries", due on July 25 via Roadrunner Records. Bonus material on the set will include a 40-minute documentary about the making of the record complete with the band's own private tour footage, a cover of DEEP PURPLE's "Soldier of Fortune" (recorded for U.K.'s BBC radio), the video for "The Grand Conjuration", liner notes, photos, an enhanced 24-page booklet, deluxe sleeve, and 5.1 surround exclusive mix of the record made by original mixed/engineer Jens Bogren.

In other news, the rumored collaboration between OPETH frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt, Steven Wilson (PORCUPINE TREE) and Mike Portnoy (DREAM THEATER) will probably become reality in a near future. The project will maintain a low key and interviews will be sparse. This will be a sheer musical communion that its members wish to keep clear of the "supergroup" hype.

OPETH's "Ghost Reveries" has been nominated in the "Album of the year 2005" category for U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine annual awards. The award is handed out on June 12 at London Camden's Koko.

OPETH recently announced the departure of longtime drummer Martin Lopez. After being plagued by illness and anxiety attacks, Lopez decided he wanted to concentrate fully on his own project, currently unnamed. His replacement will be Martin "Axe" Axenrot, who's been filling in for the last five tours and who also recorded with the band during the recent BBC sessions.
